The fishing around Petersburg is unparalleled! In our waters you can find Halibut, King Salmon, Silver Salmon, Rockfish, Ling Cod, Shrimp, and Dungeness Crab. There are many great hikes in and out of town for all different levels. Here are a few of our favorites. City Creek. This trail begins at Sandy Beach and ends at City Creek. The first ten minutes of the walk is a newly constructed board walk. After that it gives way to a beaten path through the forest. During a rain storm some spots may become muddy and hikers will need to step over large sections of roots. This is a fun quick walk for young children but can be a little challenging for older folks. Blind River Rapid. You'll need a car to access this easy board walk. Located 15 miles south of Petersburg this trail will lead you through muskeg to the rapids of Blind Slough. Bring your fishing pole and camera, this has long been the most popular place to watch and fish for king and silver salmon in June and July. Towards the end of July the bears come out to clean up what is left in the river so be on the look out for them. Three Lakes and Ideal Cove Trail. This boardwalk is by far my favorite hike. It takes about 30 minutes to drive to from town and as far as how long it takes to hike depends on you. All three lakes are connected to each other by boardwalk but at each lake is a board walk that will take you back to the main road. Two of the lakes have a small row boat the you are welcome to take out and enjoy. Be sure to stop by the Visitor Center or Forest Service building before you go and ask for a plant identification pamphlet, it will add that much more to your hike! The Ideal Cove trail is accessible from Hill Creek Bridge which is about half way between the Crane Lake and Hill Lake trail heads. Parts of this trail are muddy and hard to follow but the end view of Fredrick Sound and the mainland are beautiful. Petersburg Mountain. This hike also takes off from the state dock. This trail is rated "Most Difficult" by the Petersburg Ranger District. The total length of the trail, one way, is 3.5 but feels more like 10 to me! With in the 3.5 mile you will go from sea level to 3000 ft in altitude. The summit of Petersburg mountain offers amazing views of Petersburg, the coastal mountains and glaciers, and Wrangell Narrows. This hike will take between 6-8 hours depending on how many times you stop to take in the view!
